Apple Configurator 2 – Where are the IPWS Files?

By | October 4, 2015

With the update to Apple Configurator 2, there is a new location to look for your IPSW files. Thanks to @TechGrlTweeter, she was able to answer the question as to where those files actually lived:

Note: Her tweet mentions a random number before the Group.com.apple… folder. In my install I did not see that, but your mileage may vary.

For reference, Apple Configurator (1) stored these files in the following location:

Once you’ve dumped some ipws files in that location – how do you actually install them using Apple Configurator 2?

In AC1.3+ you could alt click on the devices option and install via that, but for the life of me I can’t find the same/similar mechanism in AC2.

Unfortunately I think this is only for staging the current update(s).

If you need to use a specific IPSW, you can select the device in the device browser and drag the .ipsw file onto the device. I think you can also drag it into the update drop down window.

        Thanks for the response Freddie!

Looks like the drag and dropping in the device browser is a good workaround – shame I can’t seem to make it part of a blueprint though.

I have a followup question – any idea where the “never update” option has gone? The project I’m working on could really do with iOS being locked to a single version on the devices we’re using with OS updates disabled.

        Thanks again,

          Glad to help!

Is it possible to leave the update step out of the blueprint and not have it update the device? I haven’t had a chance to play around with the blueprints much at this time to confidently say it won’t attempt the update.

Configurator 2 uses the following folder to cache downloads of released IPSWs:

    ~/Library/Group Containers/K36BKF7T3D.group.com.apple.configurator/Library/Caches/Firmware

If you want to ‘pre-warm’ Configurator’s cache, you can copy the latest IPSW for each device type to this folder. Older IPSWs in this folder, or unreleased IPSWs will be ignored and ultimately deleted.

The drag and drop of an IPSW to a specific device is for installing beta releases of iOS from developer.apple.com. These cannot be used in a blueprint.

What good was migration assistance if it did not copy over the already downloaded IPSW files.

Also all the back up names changed and ended up with 100 blueprints, one for every device

Much appreciated the link to the new IPSW location as there is not much documentation on Apple Configurator 2

I moved the IPSW file in to the location listed for AC2. The file was dated for Sep 26th 2015 last modified. For some reason the AC2 does not pick up the file and continues to download it every time I connect a device.

Yes. I, too, can’t get AC2 to use the cached .ipsw file. It downloads the whole iOS file each time I Restore an iPad. Don’t like it.
